Novo Cinemas·Kiosk design·2024

Designed a kiosk experience in English and Arabic.

Context

In the Gulf, a large share of moviegoers walk up and buy their ticket at a machine. I designed the end-to-end kiosk experience: the least forgiving surface a cinema has, where a stranger in a queue, in one of two languages, has to get from poster to ticket without a single wrong turn.

The challenge

Three hard boundaries. English and Arabic carrying equal weight inside one layout that never rearranges itself when you switch. No onboarding, because nobody teaches you how to use a kiosk. And a locked brand, already set by the existing web and mobile work.

What happened

  • I built the flow around three decisions: what to watch, where to sit, and pay.
  • Food and drinks sit inside that flow as an optional step.
  • I made the seat targets large, so people can tap them accurately while standing in a queue.
  • The first version asked for a phone number to send the ticket, and people stalled there. I removed the field. Now you book, pay, and the tickets appear on screen. You print them at the kiosk or scan a QR code to get them on your phone.
  • I sized every button to hold both English and Arabic, so the layout stays the same when you switch.

Detailed info coming soon.

The decisions, what broke, and what I would do differently are still being written up.
