Context
This was my first project. The first project of my life, and the first thing I ever designed and shipped.
I had nothing to show him, so I asked the founder to bet on me: if I could not deliver, he paid me nothing. He took it.
A platform that runs an industrial 3D printing business. Printers, projects, materials and costs in one place, operable from anywhere in the world.
The challenge
Running the machines took a trained specialist. That made the business expensive to staff and impossible to watch remotely. The job was to turn an expert process into steps a non-expert could follow, without taking away anything the machines could do.
The outcome
- Anyone can operate the printers now. The steps are simple enough that a trained specialist is no longer a requirement, and the training that went with it is gone too.
- The printers can be watched from anywhere in the world: live status, temperature, material condition, and a camera on every print.
- Operating cost came down by around 40%, because the specialist was the expensive part.
- I won the project with an offer. If I could not deliver, they would not pay me. Ten weeks to ship, learning four hours a day next to six hours of building.
